“His Majesty” farewells record career

“It is time to end my active handball player career, which means I have played my last handball match. I have enjoyed the trip, and I will miss the adrenaline, the locker room and going on the field to perform.”

Lindberg has been a long-standing presence on the right wing internationally, having made his national team debut in 2003 and played in the European cup with HSV Hamburg and Füchse Berlin.

Lindberg retired from the Denmark national team with 308 caps, and is only the second player to pass the 300 mark — the other being Lars Christiansen — in the side where simply being a part of the team is highly competitive.

In the 23 years playing for the national team, Lindberg took medals of every colour, including three EHF EURO trophies, two world titles and one Olympic gold. He also earned the nickname “Hans Majestæt,” which translates directly to His Majesty.

Lindberg was named All-star Team right wing at the 2013 World Championship, where Denmark clinched the silver medal. In 2022/23 and 2023/24, he was named right wing of the season at the EHF Excellence Awards.

Lindberg is a prolific scorer. He is not only the record holder for most goals in the Bundesliga overall, with 3,114 in 500 matches, but was top scorer of the Bundesliga season on three separate occasions. He was also top scorer of the EHF Champions League 2012/13 and the EHF Cup in 2016/17 and 2017/18.

His goals contributed to three international club titles, won over the span of a decade. Lindberg and Hamburg raised the EHF Champions League trophy in 2012/13. 10 years later, he took the second of two second-tier titles with Berlin — the EHF European League 2022/23, which followed the EHF Cup 2017/18.

For the last two seasons of his career, Lindberg has been in the jersey of HØJ Elite, back home in Denmark. It is there that his handball journey will continue, as Lindberg will now step into the role of sports manager at HØJ. Lindberg has also been an ambassador for the EHF Respect Your Talent programme since 2025.
