Victor Tomás’s career is inextricably linked to the club where he spent almost 20 years, FC Barcelona. Tomás was born in the Catalan capital and joined the club’s youth teams as a teenager before making his debut on the senior side aged 17.
He was forced to retire aged 34 in 2020 due to a heart problem, after being involved in 69 trophies for the club and leading it as captain for many years.
Tomás’s father Carlo also played handball and the young Victor picked up a handball aged eight - a number which would be linked to him throughout his career. He picked ‘8’ for the back of his jersey when he joined the senior team and wore the number until his retirement.
Among the many trophies Barça won during Tomás’s time at the club were three EHF Champions League titles - first in 2005, and then again in 2011 and 2015. Tomás has said the 2015 victory capped off a perfect season for the club.
For Spain, Tomás won gold at the 2013 IHF Men’s World Championship, silver at EHF EURO 2016, and bronze at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and EHF EURO 2014. He played 173 matches and scored 551 goals for the national team.
Tomás’s retirement coincided with the Covid-19 pandemic, but in 2022 Barcelona gave him a proper send-off - retiring his shirt at a Champions League match against THW Kiel, which Barça won by two goals.
Tomás now continues to work for Barça, and acts as an ambassador for the EHF’s Respect Your Talent programme.
