Momir Ilic is very much a presence in the handball world today, coaching Telekom Veszprém as they dominate in the Hungarian league and experience success in the EHF Champions League.
Ilic brings huge experience to his current role as Veszprém head coach. The 2m-tall left back started his career in his native Serbia, moving away to Slovenia to join RK Gorenje Velenje in 2004.
In 2006 the Bundesliga came calling, and Ilic left the Balkans to join VfL Gummersbach - the starting point, like so many handball legends, for greatness in the future. With Gummersbach he won the EHF Cup in 2009, and that was the jumping-off point for a move to THW Kiel.
At Kiel, Ilic experienced a huge run of success. Together with the likes of Filip Jicha and Daniel Narcisse, he won the EHF Champions League in 2010 and 2012, adding the IHF SuperGlobe title in 2011.
That was also the period of Ilic’s greatest international success, with Serbia taking home silver from the EHF EURO 2012.
In 2013, Ilic joined Telekom Veszprém for the end of his playing career - and the start of his coaching career. Following retirement in 2019, he took over Veszprém’s under-21 team, and then in 2021 was named head coach, replacing David Davis.
