BIOGRAPHY
Line player Dragan Skrbic had a long and successful career, winning titles at both international and club level and playing for clubs in Serbia, Spain, Germany and Slovenia.
Skrbic was born in Yugoslavia in Kula, now Serbia, and first made his mark playing for Belgrade club Crvena zvezda. At the age of 23 he was recruited by Atlético Madrid, starting a string of seasons in Spain for ultimately four clubs - with short stints at Alzira and Ademar Léon later followed by five years in Barcelona to close out his career.
In between, Skrbic also played for VfL Hameln and HSG Nordhorn in Germany, and had two years with Celje in Slovenia.
He won several domestic championships - in Yugoslavia, Spain and Slovenia - and with Barcelona picked up both the EHF Cup in 2003 and the EHF Champions League in 2005.
Skrbic’s international career was for Yugoslavia, both before and after the fall of socialism, with the team’s greatest successes coming at the end of the 1990s. He won bronze medals at the EHF EURO 1996 and the 1999 and 2001 IHF Men’s World Championship, prior to his retirement in 2005.
In 2000 Skrbic was named IHF World Player of the Year, and was named on the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games All-star Team after a stellar tournament in which Yugoslavia finished fourth. Skrbic scored six times in the bronze medal match, won by Spain.
Skrbic retired in 2007.
